This post will be picture heavy because, well, pictures are more fun to look at than words. We took a mini-vacation/long weekend/anniversary trip to Chicago this year. We did a lot in 4 days and I could have stayed a lot longer. We had both done a lot of the touristy stuff when we were kids, so we didn’t really have big plans heading into the weekend. There were only two items were on our list. 1. Cubs game 2. architectural boat tour.
The drive through Wisconsin is always interesting. I always enjoy the gigantic billboards way off the interstate. I assume some strange zoning code is in place. And then there is the cheese! A very wonderful thing about Wisconsin.
We picked up some squeakers, aka cheese curds for the road. I also found some delicious beer at the gas station. New Glarus’ Spotted Cow. I had heard good things about this beer but since we can’t get it in MN, I hadn’t had a chance to try it yet. It was worthy of buying the next time we cross the border.
As if life couldn’t get any better, at the next stop I had my very first Dunkin Donuts experience. I think Mr. BKL was wondering how a $2 coffee could make one person so happy. After the cheese, beer, and coffee trifecta, my vacation was already a success a few hours in.
When we finally rolled into town we made our way over to the Hancock Tower and its observation deck. It was pretty neat.
This guy makes every photo better looking.
This looks like a passport photo or something.
(We look unsure about the guy taking our picture)
We walked the city had some beers, some dinner, and called it a day. Next up – Wrigley! After a Dunkin stop (duh) and a visit to the bean.
Somebody was in heaven.
(0-2 looking normal while having strangers take our picture)
The Cubs Win! After the game we ate at Goose Island and wandered Wrigleyville for a while before heading back to the hotel.
The next day I saw the best boat ever. The Summer of George.
We did the architectural boat tour next. It was really neat seeing all the buildings from the river. Even though I knew a lot of the things the tour guide talked about, I also learned a little ;) I have a soft spot for the early 1900’s art deco buildings of Chicago. Probably my favorite style. I won’t bore you with photos of buildings.
Even though I brought my running gear with me, I didn’t go running on our trip. I was itching to run along the lake, but we were pretty busy and sleeping past 6:00 am was pretty much the greatest thing ever.
Thanks Chicago. Until next time, cheers!
