Let’s talk about sleep.
Confession: Mr. BKL and I sleep on a full size bed. You know, the size smaller then a queen, not much bigger the a twin? In college we both got full size beds and chose to sleep on the one I had because it was a little nicer. Since being married and having slept in other larger beds when traveling or staying with friends, it didn’t take long to learn that having that extra 6 inches in width and 5 or so inches in length makes a very large difference.
Being home in your own bed always has it comforts, but sometimes I get a little too excited to go to sleep when we go anywhere these days. I know I make it sound like we both are crazy sleepers – we aren't at all – it’s just that sleep is so precious these days and being comfortable is sooo important. In fact, I thank the Lord almost every night that Mr. BKL doesn’t snore, doesn’t toss and turn, and doesn’t take up an obnoxious amount of space. And as far as I know, I am not an obnoxious sleeper. My only fault is being THE lightest sleeper ever. I hear everything. And every tiny movement, sound, and light that happens in the night – I wake up. I hope that someday it will come in handy, you know, some imaginary scenario where I hear or smell a fire and am able to get my neighbors out of their house and to safety with a cape in. But alas, so far it’s just a giant pain in the arse. I seriously don’t know how I will ever sleep when we have a baby. When we have babysat for babies, I don’t think I slept a wink. constantly listening to make sure they were breathing/waking up every time they moved or sighed. At 9 months of age no less. Lord help me. But I digress.
Today we went and started a search for a new queen sized mattress. We went to 4 different places. The first was a factory direct store that sells mattresses made here in our city. It was small, but I think we were still overwhelmed. Next up were stops at mega, generic, traditional furniture stores. Warning: soapbox coming. I loathe these places. First, the markup on furniture at these places is ludicrous. Second, the sales people on commission drive me insane. The lurk and follow you until you happen to look at something and then before you know it you are answering their questions, engaging them. You never stood a chance. Third, I get nauseous when looking at their wares for sale. Tacky, gaudy, stuffy furniture and decor. It’s just not my style.* I’m sorry I’m not sorry that I don’t like 99% of the stuff at places like Slumberland, HOM, Schneiderman’s, etc. But, they have mattresses, and so we went.
Our search was pretty comical. Mr. BKL pretty much doesn’t care what the bed is like as long as it’s bigger. And I believe him. I am convinced that he can sleep anywhere, anytime, any surface. And to be honest, I am not terribly picky either. Sure it would be nice to be able to splurge on a Sleep Number or Tempurpedic bed, but it’s not in the financial stars. We came to an agreement on a Sealy that was somewhere in the middle of plush and firm. Low profile, reasonably priced.
UPDATE: We purchased the Sealy yesterday! It will be delivered on the 12th.
The mattress is just the beginning. I am going to share some of my favorite bed frames and headboards. Maybe someone will magically deliver them to me if I put them out there into the universe.

*Disclaimer: Our living room couch and chair are from HOM. They have their moments. But most of the time, the stuff at those places does not suit me nor my style. It is what it is. For some insight into what is my style, if I had the means, I would live in the Room and Board catalogue. A girl can dream.
